MR. WALLACE HUMPHREY, JR., 69, was born June 28, 1951 in Lexington County, South Carolina. He entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia, South Carolina.
He was the third born son of the late Grace Green Humphrey and Wallace Humphrey, Sr. Wallace was educated in the public schools of Edgefield County, graduating from W.E. Parker High School, Class of 1970.
Wallace was the first black police officer in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina. He was also employed by Amos & Sons Funeral Homes for many years. He was well known in the midlands of South Carolina and beyond.
Wallace was a member of Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina where he was a Trustee and a member of the Mass Choir. Wallace was preceded in death by both parents; two brothers, Ira Lee Humphrey and John D. Humphrey; a sister, Joyce Makonnen; an aunt, Virginia Casteal and a close cousin, Ellis Green.
Those left to celebrate his life and cherish his memories include: a loving wife – Yvonne Watson Humphrey of the home; two daughters – Erica (Nelson) Abney of Gilbert, South Carolina and Adria Humphrey of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; two sons – Frederick (Keiona) Julie of Clinton, South Carolina and Dexter (Eve) Julie of Lexington, South Carolina; a granddaughter reared in the home – ShaRece Humphrey of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; four sisters – Gloria Green of Ninety-Six, South Carolina, Juanita Coleman of Columbia, South Carolina, Diane (James) Cancer of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina and Mae Dean Denny of Augusta, Georgia; one cousin who was like a brother – Ira Green, Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina; four sisters-in-law – Annie Caughman of Lexington, South Carolina, Judy (Joe) Lewis of Augusta, Georgia, Shelby (David) Clark and Yvonne S. Watson, both of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina; six brothers-in-law – James W. (Betty) Watson of Salley, South Carolina, James E. Watson of Prosperity, South Carolina, Tommy (Frances) Watson of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, Russell Watson and Joe (Phyllis) Watson, both of Lexington, South Carolina and Taskete Makonnen of Laurel, Maryland; special loved ones – Shawanda and Fred Parker; fourteen grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends and associates who will miss his presence in the B-L community.
