William Carlos “Will” Hutto Sr., the second son of the late Mr. Homer and Mrs. Earnestine Hutto, was born on September 30, 1949. He quietly passed away in his loving wife's arms at 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the age of 74. His life, marked by resilience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to service, has left an indelible mark on us all, for which we are deeply grateful.

Born in West Columbia, South Carolina, William graduated from Lakeview High School as the president of the Class of 1967 before enlisting in the US Army. Serving with honor in Germany during the Vietnam War, he exemplified bravery and dedication to his country. He attended Columbia Junior College and earned a certificate in Business Management from Maryland University following his return home from service.

William was multi-faceted beyond his military service.  A testament to his skills and determination, he was the first African American Lab Technician at Allied Chemical.  He was a disc jockey in the 70’s and head basketball coach. He was a skilled chess player, athlete, hunter, and fisherman.  Will was an accomplished horseback rider and dog trainer, finding solace and joy in the connection between man and beast. Well into his senior years, Will continued to serve others as a skilled handyman, specializing in plumbing and electrical work. William served with dedication as President of the Lakeview Alumni Association, where his leadership brought about meaningful and positive changes that he was immensely proud of.  He demanded excellence from those around him.

Throughout his life, Will was admired and respected, imparting wisdom and knowledge to countless people. He was known for his strength, compassion, and ability to inspire others. Many remember him for his great skill and aptitude in everything he set out to do and for the life lessons he shared. His family and friends recall his uncanny ability to beat anyone in a game of spades, bid whist, horse racing, basketball, tennis, or anything he set his mind to, a true testament of his character and the profound impact he had on so many people, for which we are deeply appreciative.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Earnestine Hutto.  Two of his brothers are waiting to receive him at the gates: James Edward and Robert Bernard Hutto.  His Aunt Delta Cave will also be there to greet him.
